What am I supposed to use my iPad for again?

I wanted to use my iPad for at least a few weeks before writing about my experience, first with the setup and then with my usage, and what I think the future holds for the device.
Wi-Fi reliability. During the first few days after the iPad’s release, the most common media topic was the iPad’s poor Wi-Fi reception.  I was so concerned about it that I actually logged onto Apple to cancel my order, figuring I would wait to see what ultimately came of the issue.  Even though my unit hadn’t …

How the green movement can succeed

In case you haven’t heard, the green revolution is underway. Companies and people are focusing on sustainability, with varying degrees of effort and varying levels of success. I’m nowhere near an expert on sustainability; I would suggest reading my friend’s blog Searching for Sustainability where she focuses on this subject.
What interests me about “going green” is thinking about what it will take to make it successful as a movement.

Four healthcare innovations that have my attention

There are more innovations occurring in healthcare than anyone can count or keep track of, but I was particularly interested in these four – three that I’ve experienced personally and one that I’ve read about.  They include a new product, a new pricing philosophy, new a business model, and a new distribution model.
Getting closer to the famous “tricorder”. GE’s new portable ultrasound puts an ultrasound machine in a doctor’s pocket – about the size of a smartphone.  According to an early-trial doctor, “Having Vscan at my disposal at all times …

Time’s 50 Best Inventions of 2009, with one “Worst” invention that deserves better

Time magazine just published its list of the 50 Best Inventions of 2009.  A lot of the inventions are interesting, but are mostly outside the scope of the InnovationMinute where we focus more on “everyday innovations”.
What made the list?  Scientists have successfully teleported data from one atom to another.  A person was able to tweet a message wearing sensors on his skull that turned his thoughts into letters.  We can now send a probe to study Mercury that can withstand the 700 degree Fahrenheit outside temperatures.
There were a few interesting …

Everyday Innovation: Transforming Pizza Box

If you haven’t heard of the “Green Box” yet, it is a pizza box made of perforated cardboard that enables you to tear the top into 4 plates, and the bottom into a smaller box to store leftovers.  Genius.
Chalk this up to one of those “everyday innovations” moments that didn’t take a rocket scientist to develop, and has you saying “why didn’t I think of this”?
Can we build on this idea?  Future crazy idea: How about 12oz plastic cups with tops shaped to connect to each other, so that you …

Flip video recorder: Disruptor, but for how long?

Add video recorders to the list of industries being disrupted by “good enough” products that, with less features than the established players, become both easier to use and less expensive.
Have you seen the Flip Mino? It’s the size of a small cell phone with this little, tiny screen that can’t be bigger than 1 inch across (you can barely tell what it is recording), and is so light I forget when it’s in my pocket.
